This is the coming of age story of only-child Ashlyn Mercy, set on the shores of Lake Macquarie in Australia.  

Ashlyn is content living a single life and cocoons herself by her schoolmates, including her best friends Michael and Bree. And then the ethereally named Standish twins move to Sommersett. 

The local girls know these twins are something special. Tall, handsome, smart and athletic - these confident twins turn heads, including their own, which are both directed toward Ashlyn. 

Ashlyn struggles with her shy side when Elijah asks her out and all the ideals she holds in such high regard take second place over time, most especially her purity of mind. 

Elijah leads Ashlyn through small increasing steps until she thinks she is ready to take the final plummet into the world of adult love.
